DescriptionEmil Kosa Jr. began taking art classes at a young age, and once he was in his late teens decided to become a professional artist. Kosa was a mural artist and produced decorative art for churches and auditoriums while taking on portrait commissions and sold fine art paintings through local galleries when business was slow. In the 1930s, Kosa befriended Millard Sheets and with encouragement, Kosa began to pursue national reputation as a California watercolor artist. Also he is best known for his representational watercolors and oils; he also worked with pastels and pencil drawings depicting figurative subjects. Purple Shadows reflects his proficiency in landscape paintings and backdrops. Furthermore, one of Kosa’s favorite subjects to paint was pure untouched scenes of the Southern California landscape, and this painting is a perfect example of just that.On View
