DescriptionEmil Kosa Jr. began taking art classes at a young age and once he was in his late teens decided to become a professional artist. In the 1920s he moved from France to California and received traditional painting instructions. Kosa is best known for his representational watercolors and oils as seen in Bunker Hill; he also worked with pastels and pencil drawings depicting figurative subjects. This painting is one of his less colorful scenes seeing as it depicts a more industrial scene which is reminiscent of his earlier work. Bunker Hill was a prominent geographical location due to it representing the separation from Downtown Los Angeles from the rest of the city. Kosa gave Bunker Hill warmth, strong color and a serenity of tone and composition that marked him not only as a gifted artist, but also one who had gained control over a refractory medium. On View
