DescriptionGeorge Gibson, a Scottish immigrant, is known for having representational depictions of California landscapes. Along with watercolor, Gibson worked as an artist for the motion picture industry by creating storyboard illustrations. Eventually he became the head of the scenic art department at M.G.M. Studios. Although, the general public would not know of his work until much later in his life, the scenery work he did for films was acclaimed as the best in the business. His style is a combination of traditional English aquarelle technique with adaption from other painters found in the California watercolor school as can be seen in Gibson’s Hollister Spring. The main subjects of his paintings are Californian coasts and landscapes, the latter of which is seen in this painting. Gibson preferred to start with the broad landscape first, and then do all the detailing afterwards. On View
