DescriptionOne of the most well-known Southern California Impressionists is Edgar Payne, who organized the Laguna Beach Art Association in 1918. Most of his paintings are a variant of one of three main subjects: 1. Boldly brushed mountainscapes (usually of the Sierras or the Alps), 2. Colorful European fishing villages and boats, and 3. Southwestern desert buttes and canyons. He made a few paintings of the Tetons in Wyoming, as well as Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies. The cowboy in Teton Peaks adds a human element to the landscape that illustrates the magnificent scale of the west's geologic formations rather than serving to make this a cowboy picture, a theme that continues to enjoy popularity even today. On View
