DescriptionDong Kingman was a Chinese American artist who obtained education in calligraphy and watercolor painting. By receiving art instruction from traditional Chinese watercolorists, Kingman obtained his own distinctive watercolor style that was rather different from other California watercolorists. After the Second World War, Dong Kingman adapted a more abstract and geometric design to his paintings which were complex in subject matter as seen in View from a Window. This piece is also a wonderful demonstration on the color palette and tone that Kingman usually focused on which are cooler colors. It should be also be noted that unlike many other watercolor Californian painters at the time, Kingman did not usually paint outside of his studio. Kingman felt that portraits of cities could not be captured so he would create paintings involving the same subject matter multiple times to try and capture the city.On View
