DescriptionWilliam McCloskey made this charming portrait of a little girl after he had moved back to Los Angeles, following a nervous breakdown due to his separation from his wife Alberta. Although he was largely retired at this time, he was still painting portraits and figure studies. He submitted works to local exhibitions but they were often refused due to their conservative, academic style at a time when artists in Los Angeles were experimenting with early forms of modernism.
