DescriptionThe late portraits by McCloskey, while overwhelmingly of white, middle-class citizens, are also clues to the diversity of California’s population. Beginning in 1914, a regional trend developed, after the prominent New York artist Robert Henri was nationally recognized for his portrait series extolling California’s rich ethnic diversity. Jeff, wearing a black cowboy hat and an orange and cream bandana around his neck, was the driver of the horse-drawn ambulance for the County Hospital in Los Angeles, where McCloskey’s son was a patient in 1916.On View
