DescriptionJohn Hubbard Rich was a member of the Group of Eight, an influential modernist group in Los Angeles during the 1920s. He taught at Otis Art Institute from 1920 to 1949, imparting a mix of modernist principle and academic rigor to a generation of Los Angeles artists. Rich took on portrait commissions as a way to supplement his teaching income. However, this is more likely a figure study rather than a commissioned portrait. Carmela was a Mexican model popular with several of the Group of Eight.
