DescriptionMillard Sheets attended the Chouinard Art Institute while studying with F. Tolles Chamberlin and Clarence Hinkle. As a teenager his watercolors were accepted for exhibition in the annual California Water Color Society shows and at nineteen he was an official member of the society. Also he worked with oils and acrylics, Sheets was best known for his watercolor landscapes. He commonly worked with Surrealist imagery. Through the Second World War, many of his works were reflecting on the time showing famine, poverty, and overall darkness. He was also one of the leaders of the watercolor movement in California and has even been called the head of it. In Sheets’ 1929 Wash House he painted it on the spot on the river near Dijon, France. On View
