DescriptionJames Patrick studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in the late 1920s and by the 1930s he was considered to be an important figure in the development of the California Style. Along with watercolor, Patrick was also a passionate print maker as well as working with oils and lithography. The painting, Morning Mist, shows the morning routines of fishermen and sailors with the mist over the water reflecting the time of day this was captured. Unlike many Californian watercolor artists during this time, James Patrick would do outline the overall design and individual shapes in his work with pencil. Afterwards he would then use transparent watercolors to carefully paint the image. Patrick would often use a strong “localized color” when depicting scenes of everyday life.On View
