DescriptionRex Brandt was an integral part of the 1930s Californian watercolor movement. Although Brandt painted with other media, in his Moro Cave he demonstrates his propensity to use what he considered the perfect medium to paint air, water, and space: watercolor. Brandt observed and recorded serene landscapes he would encounter every day in California. He would even stop his car when he saw a scene he liked, and would then proceed to create the entirety of a painting. Rex Brandt produced hundreds of watercolor paintings documenting the activities of Newport Harbor. Moro Cave offers a complex abstraction of Laguna Beach’s Crystal Cove. The colors in the sky suggest that the painting is set during sunset, while the lack of an abundance of waves would point to it being a rather calm, still evening. Furthermore, it is an excellent example of his more descriptive and realistic paintings. On View
