DescriptionMillard Sheets attended the Chouinard Art Institute while studying with F. Tolles Chamberlin and Clarence Hinkle. As a teenager his watercolors were accepted for exhibition in the annual California Water Color Society shows and at nineteen he was an official member of the society. Also he worked with oils and acrylics, Sheets was best known for his watercolor landscapes. He commonly worked with Surrealist imagery. Millard Sheets created this image after painting Tenement Flats, and Sheet’s 1932 Family Flats was chosen by F.D. Roosevelt to hang at the White House to show the president’s commitment to the Arts and American People. This painting is depicting the poor tenements during the Great Depression. On View
