DescriptionDong Kingman was a Chinese American artist who obtained education in calligraphy and watercolor painting. Kingman studied under Szeto Wai who was the Paris-trained head of the Lingnan Academy. In the 1930s, Kingman served as an artist in the Works Progress Administration and painted over 300 works with the relief program. By receiving art instruction from traditional Chinese watercolorists, he obtained a distinctive style different than other California watercolorists. View from 25 CPW was drawn while Kingman was looking out from a floor of the Central Park West’s Century Condominium. The drawing shows what Kingman saw at the moment he sketched it out. Dong Kingman often started paintings by completing a few preliminary sketches of the scene beforehand, so it is probable that this sketching is a precursor to a painting. On View
