Description"Walpi" is a 1919 print depicting the Walpi pueblo in Arizona made by Edward Borein (American, 1873 - 1945). Borein was born and raised in California and started his career as a cowboy. He had a propensity for painting, having started sketching at a very young age. In part because both his father and grandfather were famous riders and in part because he himself had started out that way, he was drawn to dramatic images of cowboys and the American West in its final years of being a frontier. Many of his works also feature indigenous peoples and settlements. Near the end of his life, Borein built a home in Santa Barbara styled after a traditional Hopi house. Interestingly, it was noted that this work may have been struck after Borein’s death, though given the timeframe it seems unlikely that this was the case.On View
