DescriptionBasket bowl, coiled; Made by Panamint Indians of Death Valley. These Indians make their baskets from the year old shoots of a tough willow, grass splints, the year old shoots of the aromatic sumac and the long, black, slender horns of the martynia. Bowl is divided into panels. six being of martynia pod with designs of willow. Alternating panels of willow have designs of portions of human figures.
Given to Dona Maria Jesus Yorba born 1831) when she was about 8 yrs old, by Indian servant of her father's, Don Bernardo Yorba. It had previously belonged to the mother of the Indian servant. Dona Maria married Thomas Scully, Irish school teacher. They were the parents of Mary Scully.
