DescriptionSpanish Chest; Camphor wood covered with green leather painted in floral design; decorated with double row of brass headed tracks around border and to form panel in center of lid. Originally bound with .75" brass strip all strips missing except from right hand side of lid and rear left hand corner. Brass handles.Belonged to Dona Marie de Yorba. Dona Marie gave the trunk to her daughter Dona Ramona Yorba de Velardes, mother of the owner. said to be about 100 years old.

"Small leather covered chest: green. Camphor wood chest covered with a thin sheet of leather, gaily painted, and studded with brass headed nails. Chest like this were brought from China to Ca. during the pastroal period beginning about 1830 and were essential furnishings of the rancheros' homes which had neither closets nor wardrobes."

Dona Marie de Yorba owned this elegant chest, which she later gave to her daughter Dona Ramona Yorba de Velardes. Chests like this were brought from China to California and were essintial furnishings of the early Spanish homes, which had neither closets nor wardrobes.
