DescriptionHupa (crossed out and in pencil the words Siletz Oregon are written) Indian Woven Basket, twine. Height - 13 cm; Width - 17.5 cm; diam., 58.4 cm. circuference. Mouth - 14.4 cm. diam., 46 cm circuference. Color: Brown and tan. Material: hollow reeds. Design: Rim is cross-braided, with 2.2 cmlwidth opening of X-design reeds (base of the basket) with darker brown rows (4) below the opening. Bottom or base is slightly different; with the weaving twice the size of the rest of the basket. General circular and row design weave.

CARD #2 - This sturdy basket of peeled hazel is woven in plain, 2 element S-twined technique. Hazelnut shoots are preferred to willow and other materials because of their ease in preparation for weaving and their immunity to insect pests. The warps are exposed and cross near the top to give a decorative effect. This rim is finished by braiding.
