DescriptionPhil Dike was born in Southern California and studied art at the Chouinard Art Institute. Dike returned to California in 1929, after studying in New York City, and became one of the artists to develop the California Style of watercolor painting. In the 1930s, Dike worked at the Walt Disney Studios working on animated films and served as the president of the California Water Color Society in 1938. After the Second World War Dike’s paintings evolved into a more modern style, and he started to integrate geometric abstract ideas while adopting calligraphy into his work. Dike specialized in coastal and marine paintings and which can be seen in Golden Afternoon. The light reflecting off the rocks and water helps to demonstrate the character and definition of every rock.On View
