DescriptionThe designs on this Yuan dynasty vase were applied in cobalt blue and then covered with a clear glaze, sometimes earning it the name “underglaze blue.” The designs on the neck and base are standard, but motifs on the main body all have auspicious associations: bamboo is a symbol of strength, the Chinese word for deer (lu) is homonymous with the word for salary, and a servant brings his master a Buddha-head fruit associated with enlightenment.On View
