DescriptionThis "Crazy Quilt" was pieced together by the donor's great-grandmother Sarah Ann Hinkley Tucker of Whitehall, Wisconsin around the turn of the twentieth century. This form of quilt making is exclusively American. Filled with Victorian sentimentality, the hit-and-miss compositions of masterpieces such as this quilt are replete with memorabilia. The use of small scraps of material makes one aware of the value placed on each usable fabric fragment. Many odd shapes were pieced into squares which were then sewn together. Made of silk and velvet scraps and backed and bound with bright red silk, the quilt is also decorated with an interesting variety of stitches bordering the pieces of fabric. Separate embroidered designs consist of stars, flowers, houses, stick figures, insects, the year "1900", and an anchor.
Periodically, commemorative ribbons are worked into the pattern: NWWTA - Eau Claire March 26-27, 1897; Pennsylvania; Tippecanoe Club Harrison - Our Country's Hope; Fourth Wisconsin Cavalry Reunion Ripon September 15th and 16th, 1897; Capitol Police; and MYA Picnic River Falls, Wis. June 6, 1899.
Also, names have been embroidered on the quilt: Ida, Belle, Jillie, Myrtle, Norman, Gertie, OIC Anna L., and Mettie K.
