DescriptionJoachim Ferdinand Richardt, of Danish birth, lived in San Francisco from 1875 until his death in 1895. His paintings follow the style of the Hudson River School landscapists active in the mid-nineteenth century. Before his arrival in California, Richardt had established himsel as a painter of spectacular geographic wonders, such as Niagara Falls. In California, Yosemite and the Sequoias offered Richardt comparable geographic subjects. By painting in a larger scale, as he does in "Untitled" (Redwoods), Richardt reinforces the grandeur of his subjects. On View
