DescriptionBasket - round, with lid; twined; warp twisted from cedar bark, weft of squaw grass. Ornamentation, maltese cross (modified) in black, bands of brown and yellow at top and bottom. Lid in black border and - Made by Makah Indians. British Columbia. Height 4.25" Diam. base 5.75" Diam rim 6.375" (Known as bird-cage weave.) Written on card: Nootka gr.
Card 2: NOOTKA-MAKAH; LIDDED STORAGE BASKET 6.5" diameter, 4.5" high. Starting with a plaited stitch on the bottom, this basket is woven in the wrapped S-twining technique with cedar bark warp and grass wert. The ornamentation consists of a modified maltese cross design executed in black with bands of brown and yellow dyed grass at the bottom of the basket and around the lid rim. The lid also has an interesting design in black.
