DescriptionBasket - berry, coiled, imbricated. Foundation and sewing of cedar or spruce, imbrication in squaw grass and cedar bark. Made by Lilooet Indians, (Salish) British Columbia. The cedar roots, after being dug, are buried in the ground to keep fresh: when required, are taken out, peeled with sharp stone and hung to dry. When needed, split in long strips with bone awl. Height 7.125" Length 11.625" Width 8.125"Card 2 SALISH (INTERIOR); SMALL STORAGE BASKET Ex. Label: Coiled basket with imbricated decoration in red (split cherry bark), white (natural reed), and black (dyed reed). The imbrication technique adds rigidity to the basket. During the late 1800's the rectangular shape became typical; the "stepped star" and "cross" motifs dominate the imbricated design.
