DescriptionBasket Hat or Bowl: twined; warp and weft on bottom, rush (probably hazel). Weft on body, stems of squaw grass. Beautiful old gold color produced by age. Design in red bud bark. Ornamentation, design of lizard's feet and three narrow bands at rim. Made by Hat Creek Indians (Shasta Tribe) living on brach of Pit River, northeastern Calif. (Tribe extinct) once the most war-like of all in that territory and most dreaded by timid aborigines of Sacramento Valley. Height 4" Diam. rim. 7.75" Border formed by braiding down the unused warp stems.Card 2 KLAMATH-MODOC; BOWL SHAPED BASKET. 7.75" diameter, 3.875" high. This basket has been woven in plain, 2 element z-twining with an interesting stepped pattern woven in the wrapped twining technique with tule dyed brown.
