Modjeska became a United States citizen in 1883 and toured Poland in 1907. In 1880 when she received this gift, she was touring with her company in England. Her Polish name, Modrzejewska, was a pseudonym she chose when she first started to act in school. The first time Modrzejewska took a proper stage outside of school was in 1861 Bochnia.
