DescriptionHelena Modjeska, the renowned Polish actress, brought Shakespeare’s Arden—the forest setting of "As You Like It"—to life in the canyons of Southern California. She first moved to Anaheim in 1876 to join a utopian farming venture, a dream she soon abandoned, pushing her to return to the stage. In 1888, she began building her home, Arden, which came to embody the tranquil refuge she had originally sought in California.Frank Coburn painted this view of Modjeska seated by her fountain seven years after her death, using a photograph (object #4568) as a reference.
