DescriptionThis is an Alforja, or saddlebag, from Monsefú, Lambayeque, Peru, 1900-1930. Saddlebags were used by Mochica speaking cultures of Peru long before the arrival of Europeans in the Americas. This 20th Century bag has rhyming verses in Spanish on opposite sides of the bag which translate to, “Long live my roses, Long live my jasmine, Long live the flowers of my garden.”Spanish poem reads "Viva las flores de mi jardin, viva la rosa viva la jasmin", or, "Prosper the flowers of my garden, prosper the rose, prosper the jasmin".On View
