DescriptionThis view of McCloskey’s San Francisco backyard shows a climbing vine and flowers tumbling over a wall. Composed like her still lifes, the vegetation is seen in close up in a shallow space in front of a painted backdrop. But rather than a sumptuous velvet drape, we see a distant and poetic view of a bay, mountains, and sky. Juxtaposed with the garden wall, the landscape seems unreal, suggesting this was an adventuresome exercise of some sort. Alberta consciously or unconsciously captured all that California has to offer.
