DescriptionFan calligraphy paintings are a traditional Chinese art form still practiced by experts and held in great esteem. Broadly speaking fan paintings can be divided into calligraphic and depictive works, with the former category further subdivided into five Chinese scripts. This is a calligraphy painting of a Confucius quote: “To study and not think is a waste, to think and not study is dangerous.” The artist is Zhou Yujun, a young Shanghai artist from a long line of calligraphers who has already at the age of 14 studied under many masters of Chinese calligraphy. She creates calligraphic fan paintings from her artist’s study, Huaguo Mountain House. On View
