DescriptionThis painting harkens back to the traditional practice of Chinese fan painting. Fan painting was established as a recognized branch of Chinese painting during the Song period. Such paintings were traditionally created on oval-shaped fans that were mounted on bamboo sticks. The folding fan was most likely developed in Japan or Korea and was exported to China during the Ming dynasty. Fan paintings typically depict small-scale paintings or calligraphic inscriptions. Historically, works that were highly prized were either never used as fans or had their bamboo sticks removed and were mounted and placed in albums. Modern-day fan paintings are often placed on elaborate textiles and are then framed. On View
