DescriptionThis painting was created by Lin Yu-shan, considered a great teacher, artist and the master of contemporary Chinese bird, flower, and animal paintings. Born during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan in 1907, Lin Yu-shan actively studied Chinese poetry, Chinese literati painting as well as studying in Japan. Ironically, his studies in Kyoto during the 1930s he became better acquainted with Chinese painting, as Japanese paintings absorbed and learned many of their techniques from the Song dynasty. Lin Yu-shan was a firm believer in close observations of nature, to fuse human emotion with the subject and paint in plein air. His style was part of the gouache movement, or opaque watercolor, in which painting consisted of natural pigment, water, a binding agent and sometimes an additional material. When gouache paintings were replaced by the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibitions, Lin Yu-shan and other gouache painters created the “Chang Liu Painting Society,’ and continuously supported the education of new artists. Rabbits in traditional Chinese belief represent the moon, whereas white rabbits specifically represent longevity.
