DescriptionRex Brandt was part of the core group of California watercolor artists formed in the 1930s. Although Brandt painted with other media, his preferred medium was watercolor as he considered it to be the most expressive medium to paint water, light, and air as can be seen in his 1948 Tide Pools. This painting depicts a shore side and the separation between the water and rocks to the fortified sand on the right. With the inclusion of the fisherman in the background in mid-cast, this painting was taken in the moment with the darker colors reflecting the time of day it was captured, dusk. It should also be noted that this painting exemplifies the contrast between dark and light that displays darkness more than light while maintaining a more realistic approach which is not a common theme among Brandt’s paintings. On View
