DescriptionThis photograph depicts two men operating a crawling "caterpillar" tractor on Jeffrey Ranch. The name Jeffrey Ranch refers to a section of Irvine Company land leased and worked for several decades by George Jeffrey, a Scottish native who moved to southern California around 1897. Jeffrey Ranch produced lima beans as well as other crops, possibly citrus trees as depicted in this photograph. Visible on the machinery in the photo is the name of Holt Manufacturing Company, established in Stockton, California in 1883. George Jeffrey eventually won a seat on the OC Board of Supervisors and played a part in the development of the County, particularly Irvine.
