DescriptionJohn Hubbard Rich largely focused on portraiture, still life and genre scenes, and was briefly influenced by Robert Henri, the New York artist that led a native school of modernist realism. Mexican subjects were common in the region due to its proximity to the border, and the artist often used Mexican models in his portraits and figure studies. The boy, expertly captured with broad, loose brushstrokes, may have been a neighbor of the artist.
