DescriptionBasket, twined, made by Tlinkit women of Sitka, Alaska. She has handled four elements simultaneously; wrap, Two wefts and decorative material. It is therefore neccessary to requisete the mouth. Twining is done with finely divided spruce root and each outside splint is wrapped with colored straw. It is said this unusual basket was used as a rattle by holding it in the middle and fastening the cover. Shaped like hour-glass.Old note inside basket read "this basket, I was told, was used as a rattle by Alaskan Indians by holding it in middle & fastening cover" Old note on brown paper extremely fragile and disposed of.
