DescriptionIn 1890, around the time that Alberta McCloskey painted this still life, Pasadena's annual Rose Parade began as a promotion trumpeting the region's year-round growing season. In the late-nineteenth century, regional nurseries developed and grew hybrid roses with spectacular, large-sized blooms, which they used to lavishly decorate Rose Parade floats. In this painting McCloskey has arranged the roses using the same shallow, horizontal arrangement with a dark velvet backdrop as featured in her fruit paintings. The roses are seen in close-up, lying close to the viewer on the picture plane, and are well past their prime.
