DescriptionThe McCloskeys’ small-scale still lifes of fruit hold to certain principles of composition and lighting. A detailed, realistic rendering of a single variety of fruit asymmetrically spills across a dark, shiny wooden tabletop, lending an unusual sense of movement to the composition. The shallow, horizontal arrangement is seen in close-up, lying close to the viewer on the picture plane The intense clarity of the fruit makes the surface texture almost palpable. William made several paintings of apples spilling from containers, preferring varieties that were both red and green.On View
