DescriptionOil painting titled Ideal California Day, by Frank Coburn. In hand carved gilt frame. Size 36" x 34.5" Depicts street scene with flowers, a palm tree and several figures in 1920s style dress. Coburn came to CA. from St. Louis in 1909 - ptd'd early in Laguna Beach, by 1912 listed as living in L.A. Frank Coburn was living in Santa Ana, at 715 West 8th Street when he painted "Ideal California Day." The original exhibit label, on the reverse side of the frame, is from a one-man show at the Bowers Museum in 1938, before his death that same year. The label describes a sunlit scene of figures and lower vending stands in Los Angeles.Frank Coburn is only now gaining recognition for his art. Part of this recent acknowledgement is due to the promotion and sale of the paintings left in his estate that has recently exposed contemporary collectors for the first time to a significant body of his work. Coburn stands out from other Southland artists because his landscapes do not follow the stereotypical compositions favored by many other artists.
