DescriptionHugh Duncan had a great affection for sailing, a popular subject of his and one which allowed him to demonstrate a mastery of motion in his paintings. This particular scene of a race off the coast of Southern California shows the sailors in the lead boat committing to a daring maneuver to round a mark. Even the immediacy of watercolor was not enough to capture boat racing: Duncan used photographs as references for paintings such as this.On View
