DescriptionThis is Perfect World, a gold and pottery sculpture made by the Taiwanese artist Wu Ching in 2017. Growing up in the rural countryside of Taiwan, Wu Ching fell in love with the natural world at an early age.In fields and orchards, he discovered a language for complex human dramas in the microscopic interactions of insects. His first sculptural installation was a series of large carvings of ants, a motif which he returns to in this piece. Concerned that his wood carvings would decay in time, Wu Ching transitioned to gold casting because the medium never tarnishes.
Though he still carves the original model in finely grained wood, it is only used to create a mold from which the final golden artwork is cast. Many of Wu Ching’s works speak to Buddhist principles using insects like the actors of a fable. This work originally came with a saying which reads “Cohesion makes treasure, harmony leads to perfection.”
