DescriptionTolai Scared figure from the Tolai people in West New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea, Melanesia. Dates to the 20th century. This figure has a humanistic face, hands and feet with an insect-like body. Its body resembles the body of an ant. The majority of this figure is painted orange. However, there is black pigment on its arms; yellow pigment on its chest and white pigment accents his eyes and teeth. There is a sandy-color fibrous beard along the edge of its chin. This figure is posed with his arms out to the sides, bent at the elbows and up. He is sitting on his rear with his leg up, bent at his knees and feet on the ground. He has a wide grin on his face.On View
