DescriptionThis is Luna y Sol, a three-dimensional paper print created by the artist Rufino Tamayo in collaboration with the printmaker Luis Remba of Mixografía in 1990. It was Tamayo who in 1973 charged Luis Remba with creating an entirely new printmaking process that could capture the texture of his later paintings and—after Remba rose to meet the challenge—Tamayo created over 80 prints with Remba. Luna y Sol is the final print that the two collaborated on. Tamayo often used celestial iconography in his works, including the juxtaposition of the moon and the sun which is something that can be seen in his large murals like Dualidad. The celestial nature of the work appears to draw upon pre-Columbian iconography, but the aesthetic itself apparently stems from a Mexican folk aesthetic characteristic of the lotería game of the early 20th century. On View
