DescriptionFrancisco Zúñiga was a Mexican painter, sculptor, draftsman, printmaker, teacher, and cofounder of La Esmeralda, the National School of Painting and Sculpture in Mexico City, where he taught from 1938 to 1970. Influenced at a young age by the art of the Renaissance and German Expressionism, Zúñiga produced paintings and sculptures that reflect an appreciation for the traditions and culture of the people of Central America. Beginning in 1972, Zúñiga began to produce lithographs, creating prints of various human figures that echo the expressive and sensual nature of his forceful sculpture. In many of his figurative works, such as his Impresiones de Egipto, Zúñiga explores the techniques of figural representation in Western art, alluding to the classical compositions of Western works. Many of his prints depicting figures, including Impresiones de Egipto, additionally examine the bonds and sense of unity that exist in relationships between women. This particular print is from a set of 8 lithographs called Impressiones de Egipto. The lithographs are all printed on arches paper, which is an acid free and 100% cotton paper made in Arches Vosges, France. This print is number 65/90.
