DescriptionThis is an early Modernist-style pendant created by George Brooks, in 1964. In the late 1940s Brooks was living in Montreal and working as an apprentice jewelry maker. After becoming dissatisfied with the conventional designs being promoted by Montreal jewelers, he created his own machinery and began to produce a more avant-garde style of jewelry. Eventually Brooks got involved in the larger Montreal modernist jewelry scene where he excelled by the merit of having spent over a decade studying traditional manufacturing techniques. In 1961 he moved to Santa Barbara, California where the differences in market interests led him to another shift in style. This pendant was made early in that period, though remains stylistically consistent with the silver brooches and pendants that Brooks created in Montreal.
