DescriptionWendt’s "Sycamores" is not an Impressionist painting, as it does not evoke the ephemeral in either subject matter or stylistic approach. This is so in spite of the artist’s focus on the trunks of the sycamores, which have lost their fall leaves, and his loose brushstroke. The painting of a brook running through a shady stand of trees in Laguna Canyon is carefully composed, combining the monumental and the intimate. Wendt’s landscapes exude stability and solitude, a sustained state of immersion in nature leading to a quiet emotion akin to awe. He was a highly religious man.On View
