DescriptionAt the turn of the 20th century, Alberta McCloskey was living in San Francisco near Napa and Sonoma counties, the largest wine region of California at the time. She made a large-scale still life of mixed varieties of grapes heaped high on a tabletop. Grapes were already essential to California’s prosperity; nearly 300 grape varieties were grown in the state, supplying some 800 wineries. California’s geographic diversity allowed for a variety of wine regions to develop. Today, California wine accounts for over 80 percent of American wine production. On View
