DescriptionPortrait of David Hewes painted in 1854 by one of San Francisco’s largest name artists of the early 1850s. Hewes was also a well-known figure in San Francisco at the time where he was responsible for levelling the area surrounding the bay. This portrait was painted in San Francisco by Wm. S. Jewett (1812-1873) who arrived in 1849. It has been said that Jewett was "The first artist of establish himself in CA. "Jewett painted a number of important works in that area before leaving in 1869. Jewett portrayed Hewes as a self-assured, vigorous, handy young man at the threshold of a successful career.On View
