DescriptionIn 1922 Coburn spent two months living on a houseboat in the Los Angeles harbor making sketches. In March of the next year, he exhibited the resulting oil paintings at the MacDowell Club in Los Angeles. In this painting, he luxuriously reimagines Terminal Island at the Port of Los Angeles, using intense color in small dabs of paint to create a shimmery, golden vision of an ocean-going vessel. Petroleum shipping became the dominant industry of the port at this time.On View
