DescriptionPhotograph of Helena Modjeska in the role of Portia from Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice," 1889. Photographed by B.J. Falk, New York. Framed in brown frame with white mat. The donor of this photograph, Mr. Everett Maxwell, lived near Madam Modjeska's Canyon home when he was a boy. He was the first art critic of the Los Angeles press and the first Curator of Art at the Los Angeles Museum.

She is shown seated with her head resting on her right hand, her left hand rests of her leg and holds a fan, she is wearing a dark colored, elaborate costume and beaded choker.
