DescriptionThis fragmentary panel representing the head of Joseph is undoubtedly from a major composition of an "Adoration of the Shepherds." As a rule the adoring figures would be placed at the side of the composition, leaning forward as in this work. The panel is typically Flemish of the 16th century in composition, palette, and treatment. Stylistic elements such as the rendering of the eyes and head suggest Antwerp as the place of origin. The painter of this panel reveals his debt to the first generations of "Italianate" painters in Antwerp. The panel is remniscent of the work of the master, Bernart van Orley, Flemish (1492-1542), and was no doubt executed by an extremely competent artist familiar with his work.
